Saving space on RAWs

RAW files are big. For a JPG + RAW shoot, you often only need the RAW for your keepers. Selekt lets you decide that per photo, then honours it on export.

Every photo starts as keep-RAW, so nothing is ever dropped unless you say so. While culling a JPG + RAW pair, press Shift+R to toggle whether that pair's RAW is worth keeping. A photo marked don't-keep-RAW is treated as JPG-only.

Note that Shift+R is different from R, which switches the preview between JPG and RAW.

When you send picks to your editor and copy files to a Selects folder, choose the Smart file-type option. Smart uses each photo's keep-RAW flag:

  • Photos marked keep-RAW export their RAW and JPG.
  • Photos marked JPG-only export just the developed JPG.

The export modal shows how many photos are marked JPG-only and estimates how much smaller the Smart export will be, so you keep the files that matter and reclaim the rest.
